Women Affairs’Bureau of Persatuan Kedayan Sabah, organised Fishing Competition

17 October, 2000.SIPITANG: The Women Affair’s Bureau of Sabah Kedayan Association’s organized the first ever fishing competition held at the Kuala1 sungai Lukutan, Pelakat last Sunday, about four kilometers from the town.




This was the first ever activity held by the Bureau since it was created about two months ago. Perhaps, the first of its kind held by any ethnic association in Sabah.

About a hundred participants took part and no less than five hundred people thronged to the Kuala, witnessing the occasion. Though the sea was rough and high tide, nevertheless it was fun to look at the excitement of the participants said the President of Sabah Kedayan Association, Encik Amdee Sidik. He congratulated the Bureau Chairperson Puan Pasang Apsin and her committee members who did a very good job, which could serve as an example to other committee.

 The Kuala Lukutan is facing Labuan Island westward within the Brunei Bay.

The competition started at 8.30 morning and finished at 11.30 of the same day. Among those attended the function were Datuk Dr Hj Yussof MP for Sipitang, Ketua Kampong Pelakat, Ketua Anak negeri Sipitang Tuan Hj Yassin Pungut and the rest of committee members of the association.

Among the varieties of fish caught were those locally known, Sambilang, Sampaiding, Badukang and even Ikan Merah. The winner who caught many in numbers as well as the heaviest in weight received tops prizes including several fishing items.  There was no shortage of prizes this time; even the smallest catch received a prize for catching the smallest fish, the earliest to register too was given a prize. About 50 odd prizes were distributed for winners in various categories.

The President of KEDAYAN, in his speech on behalf of Kedayan community supported the proposal to clean up the beautiful beach and make this location as a permanent place for social function.  But first he said, retaining wall has to be constructed to avoid further erosion by sea waves. This place is ideal for a ‘tamu’ like place and more so that related to fishing. He made a request that this fishing spot to be preserved for the good of long-term use. The YB Datuk Dr Hj Yussof acknowledged the need and to look into the matter.

In his earlier speech Datuk Dr Hj Yussof urged the Kedayan community to support the effort made by the President of Sabah Kedayan Association in his attempt to strengthen the solidarity of Kedayan community regardless of political ideology. “Let the Kedayan association plays its role and a politician like me will support for the good course,” he said.

The Bureau collected more than one thousand Ringgits alone from the sale of lucky draw.
